Having had his old Abbey paddle mixer for 17 years, Willie Hall decided that it was time to trade it in. It was still going strong, but he felt it was time for a change, so he opted for a VF1250 tub mixer.
Is it as good as his old machine? “It’s very manoeuvrable and produces a good mix,” says the Cumbrian dairy farmer. “It’s a simpler machine mechanically because it has fewer moving parts. And with this one, we’ll be able to put bales through it if necessary.”
The 1970s-built cubicle shed at Prior Hall has narrow passageways, so Willie went for an unusual door configuration on his new feeder. “It’s got one door on the left and one on the right at the rear, and this allows us to feed both sides.”
As well as keeping sheep and growing some crops, the Ireby farm has about 100 milkers. “We rear everything that’s born – some as dairy replacements, some for beef,” adds Willie. “There’s generally about 275 cattle on the farm in total.”
