Abbey Machinery was established by the Cavanagh family in 1947, a family which has a long heritage and tradition in agricultural engineering dating back to the 19th Century. Abbey Machinery is one of Ireland’s largest and most respected manufacturers of agricultural equipment, with technology catering for the ‘Total Cow’. From high Tech Diet Feeders, precision Toppers, accurate Fertiliser Spreaders at the front end of the cow to Slurry Tankers, Muck Spreaders, Agitators to cater from the back end of the cow.
Abbey Machinery was founded by Mary & Joseph Cavanagh in 1947.The Cavanagh family had been blacksmiths operating a local foundry business in Abbey Lane, Nenagh since the late 1800’s. Prior to the foundation the Cavanagh’s were renowned for their innovative design and one such product was the award winning “Cavanagh Plough” which was unique and well ahead of its time.
Joseph Cavanagh spent his early years working in the foundry with his father and with a local company manufacturing aluminium. Joseph went to work in the United States in the 1930’s and during this period learned the latest welding and steel fabrication technologies while working in Upstate New York and in the shipyard’s of San Francisco.
On his return in 1946 he brought these new technologies with him and followed on the tradition of agricultural engineering the family were known for until he formed, with his wife Mary, Abbey Machinery in 1947.
