Operating throughout Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire, G Roberts Contracting Agri specialises primarily in slurry contracting. Owner Gilbert Roberts initially invested in one Abbey slurry tanker, but it wasn’t long before demand led to the addition of a second machine.

Today, the business operates two 4,000-gallon Abbey tankers, with Gilbert already considering adding a third to the fleet.

“We started with one machine, but it brought us a lot of work, so we ended up purchasing a second. We’re now running two and will potentially be looking for a third at the end of the year.”

Having previously operated another brand of tanker, the move to Abbey has proven to be a positive one for the business.

“We have a great relationship with our local dealer, Gwili Jones Tractors, and that led us to choose Abbey. We switched from another brand of tanker and we’re very happy with the Abbey machines.”

Saving Time During Busy Slurry Seasons

For a contracting operation, small improvements in efficiency can make a significant difference over the course of a long working day.

One of the standout features for Gilbert has been the loading arm and autofill system, helping the team fill quickly and keep moving between loads.

“The loading arm and autofill save us a lot of time when moving slurry. We could be working on one farm for two weeks at a time, so being able to fill quickly and keep moving makes a real difference.”

With demanding schedules and extended periods spent on individual farms, reducing loading time has helped G Roberts Contracting Agri maximise productivity throughout the working day.

Balanced and Comfortable on the Road

Towing performance is another important consideration, particularly when operating larger-capacity tankers for long periods.

One of Gilbert’s Abbey tankers operates with a dribble bar, and he has been particularly impressed by how the tanker remains balanced and comfortable to tow.

“They’re very nice to tow. Even with the dribble bar at the back, the tanker is well balanced and comfortable to drive.”

Helping the Business Take on More Work

Moving to larger-capacity Abbey tankers has also helped G Roberts Contracting Agri increase its capabilities and secure additional work.

The tankers’ internal mixing system has provided another practical advantage, particularly when working in the sandy soil conditions encountered across the region.

“The internal whisk makes a difference in sandy soil. Overall, the tankers have performed very well for us, and I would definitely recommend Abbey.”

For Gilbert, the growth of the fleet speaks for itself. What started with one Abbey tanker has developed into a two-tanker operation, with the possibility of another addition in the near future.
